The Genesis Concept
An Ancient Species
Estimated Population (Worldwide): 50,000+ (with 90% or more of the population residing in within or nearby Um’Rania.
Population Centers: Tropical regions of Bolivia, the Amazon River basin in Amazonia. Illithids generally dwell in subterranean communities (Um’Rania or several smaller subterranean communities nearby Um’Rania) that combine current technology and strange arcane features into an alien, yet, undeniably beautiful architecture. However, several small above ground enclaves have been located and destroyed in Amazonia.
Common Languages: The Dark Tongue- the Illithid native language, currently, no known translation exists. They are known to speak Spanish and have mastered a number of the indigenous languages of Bolivia and Amazonia.
Current International Status: No nation states or corporate entities are willing to acknowledge Illithids as sapient beings and allow them full citizenship.
The Sixth world has only actually been aware of the illithid race since 2050 and still most of the Sixth World truly knows very little of this race. What has become obvious is that while the rest of the Sixth World has only recently become aware of their existence, they have been present in the Sixth World since its beginning, i.e., fifty years prior. The race has been almost exclusively found to inhabit the tropical regions of Bolivia but are now rumored to have founded small enclaves in Amazonia and in other humid tropical regions. The great feathered serpent, Hualpa, leader of Amazonia, has decreed that the illithid race, if found within his borders, is to be considered an extreme danger and their presence must be eradicated. Additionally, Martin San Miguel de Oberron, the President of Bolivia, has also declared that the presence of this race within his borders constitutes a national threat. Other regional and corporate leaders, however, have not openly decreed such measures, primarily due to the fact they do not have much, if any, direct contact with the illithid race. Unfortunately, recent data suggests this fact may be changing.
Physically, Illithids have smooth skin which appears dull grey to matt black in hue. An illithid is a sapient amphibious humanoid race averaging about 1.7 to 1.8 meters (6 feet) in height and around 79.3787 (175 lbs) kilograms in weight. Yet, the race’s most obvious feature is their skull and distinct facial regions. The skulls of the illithids are reinforced structures which house a brain roughly 25% larger than the average metahuman brain. Furthermore, the facial region is a highly modified structure with up to ten tentacles ranging from .5 to just over a meter in length surrounding a very powerful rasper-like orifice. Given their larger brains, data suggests that illithids, possess both a heightened intuition and logic.
Illithids have distinct male and female sexes. However, illithids are nearly indistinct in overall appearance. The main difference is that males, on average are slightly taller and have slightly greater mass. Females have a shorter gestation (4-7 months) than homo sapiens sapiens, and give live birth to up to two ‘tadpoles’ who are estimated to take, according to the few studies conducted, upwards of two decades to fully mature.
Most illithids appear to communicate using a language known as the Dark Tongue. They are known to use ritual gestures and postures as they communicate. Illithids also have a unique written language which, as of last year, has only just been deciphered. Illithids are known to speak Spanish and have mastered a number of the indigenous languages of Bolivia and Amazonia. However, their mouth and facial structure seems to inhibit their ability to communicate precisely using spoken languages other than their own.
Location, Culture and Society
The illithid homeland is the located in the Beni region of Bolivia. The region is sometimes referred to as El Beni, and it is the northeastern department of Bolivia in the lowlands region of the country. Beni`s weather is tropical and humid, with a prevalence of warm to hot temperatures. Beni borders upon Amazonia to the northeast, and the Bolivian departments of Santa Cruz to the southeast, La Paz to the west, Pando to the northwest, and Cochabamba to the south. Beni’s territory is mainly covered by rainforest (particularly the northern and eastern portions of the department) and pampa (notably the grassland Moxos Plain to the south, closer to the Andean reaches). Much of Beni rises over one hundred meters above sea level. Although most of the department is flat, along the border with La Paz there are two sierra chains called Eva Eva and Pelado. Beni is criss-crossed by numerous Rivers, all of which are Amazon tributaries.
Specifically this homeland is located under the western region of Beni below the foothills of the Serrania del Pelado Mountains. These foothills rise in elevation and form the western border of the department. The illithid homeland is a large subterranean cavern system which is adequately watered and has multiple natural airways that provide excellent ventilation. The illithids, apparently, refer to their homeland as a city state they call Um’Rania.
The Um’Ranian Illithids maintain a secretive society in relation to the rest of the Sixth World. The precise location of Um’Rania remains a mystery to Bolivian authorities, who have, at last count, organized six major expeditions into the Serrania del Pelado Mountains and many more minor ones in an effort to locate and exterminate the illithid species. These expeditions have resulted in failure for the Bolivian government and the deaths of many of the expeditions’ personnel.
What is known of the race is that they show a very strong tendency towards magic. In fact, also according to preliminary data, that they are extremely resilient against magic as well. Similarly, at east one peer reviewed analytic treatise has been published speculating that upwards of 70% of the illithid population exhibit some form of arcane talent, mostly as magicians with a smaller percentage showing talents as mystic adepts. The study showed that very few of specimens of the race exhibit magical talent in the form of pure physical adepts. This tendency is reflected in their culture where the arcane is venerated and society seems ordered by one’s ability to perform magic. Therefore, Um’Rania’s government may be a form of oligarchy where the oligarchs are leading practitioners of magic. Mystic adepts are rarely powerful enough to enter into the ruling class and physical adepts generally can only advance in Um’Rania’s defense forces. Mundanes are forced into the lowest ranks of illithid society and are viewed with contempt.
Furthermore, Xenosociologists who attempt to study the species report that illithid society may be amoral- at least, in terms of general metahumanity- and may not value life as metahumanity does. There are indications that the species seems to be xenophobic and exhibits a strong hatred of those who are physically and culturally different from themselves. There are also indications that the race practices a form of slavery, which utilizes slaves taken from populations of other sentient races. Obviously, this does not endear them to the rest of the Sixth World. Yet, illithids do not seem to enslave members of their own race.
The dietary customs of the species fundamentally impacts, in the negative, how the rest of the Sixth World views the species. Physiologically, illithids are omnivorous but their society seems to prefer the uncooked flesh of mammalians. What is known of illithid cuisine is that dishes are usually served with ceremonial fanfare and are heavy on spices and sauces. This data seems innocuous, however, the major aspect of their diet, which above all negatively impacts their standing among the denizens of the Sixth World and has made them infamous, is that they actively seek out the brains of sentient creatures for consumption. It is speculated that the consumption of sentient brains somehow temporarily increases the mental activity within an individual illithid. The idea of the brains of sentient creatures being prepared with spices and served in formal dining rituals with ceremonial fanfare does not sit well with the other sentients who comprise the Sixth World.
The religion of the illithids, like their dietary customs, not only is odious and but poses even more of a threat to metahumanity and other sentient beings of the Sixth World. The illithids worship and venerate strange spirits whom they call the Old Ones. Rumor exists that the ‘Old Ones’ are malign spirits who seek the destruction of Metahumanity. Nothing more is known about their religion and the nature of their summoning traditions.
Consequently, because of their particular dietary customs, their religion and their practice of the institution of slavery, there are no known nations or corporate entities willing to acknowledge their sentience or who wish to treat with them politically or on an economic basis.
